Introducing POPO – Bat Emergence Video Analysis Service

POPO is an exciting new UK-based ecologist-aided service to help your bat emergence survey workflow.

• POPO streamlines video analysis for bat emergence and other ecological video surveys.
• A collaboration of UK-based bat ecologists and tech experts. 
• ‘POPO Pilots’ are trained ecologists with real-world experience of bat emergence surveys and subsequent manual analysis. They use the POPO machine learning (AI) software to reduce time and improve accuracy.
• Send us your data and we return the results as a series of annotated video clips and summary tables. These include notes for each video by the POPO Pilots saying whether or not a bat emerged.
• POPO has been tested and honed over the last 18 months, demonstrating significant efficiency savings and accuracy improvements as compared with manual analysis.

POPO is an alternative to spending hours in-house manually reviewing bat emergence videos. You, your clients, Local Planning Authorities and SNCOs can have confidence that the software-aided workflow has been verified and tested to be at least as accurate as a benchmark of full manual analysis by experienced bat ecologists.

Our new technology converts hours of video footage into manageable data by capturing only the motion detected. This allows our ‘POPO Pilots’ to quickly determine if bats are present and where they emerged (both spatially and temporally) improving accuracy and reducing review time per video. Currently, we are offering this service to a limited number of clients for infrared (IR) only, but we look forward to rolling out to more clients, as well as to thermal once our verification is complete.
